Greg Bush

Greg Bush, Sr. Manager Real Estate and Facilities at Sybase
2:35 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Greg, a Senior Manager at Sybase, an SAP Company, has 37 years of facility operations experience. Greg currently operates this firm's campus and global Data Center in California, with the majority of his carrier is in the high tech environment.

Using his knowledge and experience, the power usage effectiveness (PUE) of Sybase's global Data Center is 1.4, down from the original design PUE of 3.3. Greg has creatively used the various physical laws in play inside the electrical/mechanical systems to achieve this level of efficiency. Applying his ideas, a variety of simple to intricate applications have been implemented to achieve this PUE in a 2000 designed Data Center.

Greg worked with PG&E and LBNL to pioneer the first Bay Area Data Center to use a Fresh Air Economizer (FAE) to unload the mechanical systems. He evolved the FAE into Heat Recovery which now heats the office space during winter months, as well as using the FAE to provide Emergency Cooling to the Data Center. His style has more of a "hands on; what if" approach to energy solutions. Greg also collaborates with various engineering firms to develop creative solutions to the issues they bring to him.

Prior to Sybase, he managed 33 Compaq Computer sites. Earlier in his carrier, he supported 2 HP Invent campuses, in 2 Western states, including a significant Data Center. He has also operated and supported a SCADA system at a major power utility headquartered in the Pacific Northwest. At that campus he achieved a significant reduction in annual power consumption. The original commissioned campus design used 32 mW a year and was reduced to 17mW through his efforts which also lead to greater tenant comfort.

Greg holds a BOMI Systems Maintenance Administrator designation and is a Certified Energy Auditor. He currently sits on the USDOE Steering Committee for Data Center Certified Energy Practitioners certification program.
