Companies are including wireless headsets as a key business component of their employee’s resources and daily work life.

Wireless headsets are sophisticated devices. The designs incorporate advanced electronics, micro acoustics and quite a bit of computing power.  Underneath it all, they work by exploiting the laws of physics; specifically electro-magnetics and radio transmission.  At this physical level you must work within the limits of the radio spectrum that is available.  Understanding how headsets behave when your application is at the physical limit allows the IT and Facilities planner to avoid problems and get the most out of their wireless headsets.

Panelist: Anna Maria Bailey, Program Facility Manager, Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL)
Panelist: Norm Ringgold, Head of IT Operations and Infrastructure, SLAC National Accelerator Lab (SLAC)

"High Performance Computing" (HPC) centers provide an excellent model for virtualized and Cloud data center environments. The similarities between Cloud computing and Supercomputing environments is becoming more evident as we build out newest and most efficient data centers spaces. Both the Cloud and High Performance Computers maximize compute efficiencies by continuously operating processors at close to maximum speeds creating very high compute densities and power densities alike. So, the efficient 400 V electrical distribution systems and the combined air and water cooling solutions that are new to our data centers have been deployed for DOE and Research and Development Supercomputers for years. And, for different reasons, both Cloud and HPC computing environments are less reliant on the redundancy and reliability built into our traditional data center spaces. The Cloud provides inherent reliability within the processing environment allowing for fail over from computer to computer and now, often, from facility to facility. Supercomputers, on the other hand, are usually used for high volume computational and problem solving purposes. So with the right data storage strategies, Supercomputers can afford to fail softly and restart their processing without the financial implications experiences by more "critical" data center operations. So backup electrical power is less important in both environments. Finally, today’s advances in Supercomputing technologies are leading us to much higher operating temperatures and much greater computing and energy efficiencies. These amazing solutions being developed for Supercomputers today will find their way into our data centers in the not too distant future.
